FAMILY AND SCHOOL CONNECTION
by Mrs. Chamberlin

This is such a great winter with a lot of snow so what a perfect time to try a new winter activity together as a family – try snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. There are many places where you can rent equipment or you could borrow some from friends. You can also check out Goodwill or a secondhand sporting goods store.

There are some great places to go skiing or snowshoeing locally, the Owls Head Transportation Museum, Tanglewood or out behind the Thomaston Grammar School. What a great way to get exercise and have fun, too. I love to be outside cross-country skiing or snowshoeing this time of winter enjoying the peacefulness and beauty of the woods in winter.

When you get back home, you and your family can have a pizza making session. Make this crust recipe before you go out skiing then it will be ready to make into pizza when you return.

Our son often makes this pizza dough recipe.

PIZZA DOUGH
  • 1 cup warm (110 F) water
  • One ¼-ounce envelope active dry yeast
  • 4 teaspoons olive oil
  • 3 cups bleached all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  1. Pour the warm water into a large bowl.  Add the yeast and let stand for 2 minutes, then whisk until the yeast is dissolved.  Stir 1 tablespoon of the oil into the yeast mixture.
  2. Add 1½ cups of the flour and the salt, mixing by hand until the mixture is smooth.  Continue adding the flour, ½ cup at a time, working the dough after each addition, until all the flour is mixed but the dough is still slightly sticky.  Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 3 minutes.
  3. Grease a large mixing bowl with the remaining olive oil.  Place the dough in the bowl and turn to oil all sides.  Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and set in a warm place until the dough nearly doubles in size, 1 – 1½ hours.
  4. Remove the dough from the bowl and briefly knead, separating into two equal-size balls.  Place the dough on a lightly oiled baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap, and set in a warm place to rest for 15 minutes.  Top with your favorite pizza toppings.
