How We Do It

Color Book

This ongoing fall project builds upon itself with children learning and applying new skills weekly until they’ve been guided through all key tools in the KidPix drawing program. For example the first session happens during red week. Children learn how to use the circle tool, choose colors, and manipulate the alphabet stamp set to spell the word red and their names.

As we progress language of instruction is applied as children are guided to make horizontal lines, place an object in a certain position or locate a tool. Soon children have an understanding of all tools and begin to design their own pictures for a given color. They have repeated opportunities to make decisions about their choice of tools, selecting the best one for each component of their illustration.

Each child’s images are printed so that he or she may follow-up by using real rubber stamps to copy each color word in both uppercase and lower case letters. The pages are collected and once the project is complete the work is bound into books the children take home. Our project descriptor for this project is just a general guide as expectations are individualized for students.
