Children Children Book

We adapt the classic Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See by Bill Martin Jr. (Author), Eric Carle (Illustrator) for several class projects that help children to understand the concepts of letter, word, and sentence as well as beginning word reading so it is key that children become familiar with the repetitive text quickly. The print version of this book is available in our classroom by the second week of school to help children gain critical skills while learning one another's names. This project integrates elements of our literacy, social studies, health, and art curricula.

We begin by reading the original book. Then we discuss what makes a good self portrait. Complete their self portraits to the best of their first-week-of-school ability. Their images then get scanned for both the print and web-based version of this book. The print version includes each child’s photo along with their illustration to aide in children as they “read” this story. I’ve done this as a welcome to school activity for several years. It consistently helps children learn one another’s names quickly and become familiar with many sight words.
