During the winter, Mrs. Hardt's students researched 11 native American
tribes. Working with Mrs. Hardt and their library media specialist,
Ms Dodd-Collins, students researched their tribe and the region in which
their tribes lived. They also created a name for themselves, based
on what they learned about their tribe.
The research included geography- the region that their tribe came from. They learned about the climate, the physical features, and where the region was located in North America. Next, they gathered information on their tribe’s shelter. They found out how it was made and what was used to make it. Some children learned that their tribe moved their shelter during the year. Do you go to the grocery store to get your food? Well, the children found out that Native Americans had to either hunt, plant, or gather all of their food. They used different tools such as bows and arrows, snares, spears, and baskets. Tribes not only caught animals for food, they used animal skins to make clothing. Some tribes also used plants to make skirts, and feathers and shells for decoration. Students worked with their art teacher, Mrs. Percy, to create a display which included a shelter representative of their tribe, a background depicting their region, a glossary, and a book of interesting facts. Working with their music teacher, Ms Carroll, the children created a Native American song based upon the Passamaquoddy language and performed it. In addition, Hawk Henries from the Nipmuc Nation came to the school, and all the children learned about his tribe’s culture, how he makes flutes and creates songs, and listened to his music. The children concluded their project by creating a bibliography so that others can use the same resources we did. They used books, encyclopedias, and the Internet.
The students also created a book which included all their work. This book was given to the school library and can be read in the library. Click on the tribes below to see the students' displays and exerpts from their book. |
