Counselor Handbook
The MSAD #50 public education system mission statement indicates that
the district is organized and staffed to pursue excellence in education
for the benefit of all the students in the communities served. It is the
district's goal to help students develop the knowledge and skills that
they will need to continue their education after graduation and/or to enter
an occupation. In accordance with the mission statement, the school counselors
employed by the district are working together to continuously develop,
coordinate, direct and evaluate a comprehensive developmental guidance
program for all students from Kindergarten through Grade twelve.
Services currently offered at all grade levels include individual and
group counseling, classroom instruction, individual appraisal and testing
of students, educational advising and placement, as well as consultation
with parents, teachers, administrators, and mental health and medical professionals.
These various interventions will hopefully produce measurable outcomes
for each student in the areas of learning, personal and social development,
and career and vocational development. The guidance curriculum written
and adopted in 1991 by the MSAD #50 Curriculum Committee serves as a guideline
for coordinating and evaluating services for all students.
Each of the district's school counselors has a Master's degree in Counselor
Education with School Guidance as a specialized area of study. In addition,
each counselor is certified by the State of Maine's Department of Educational
and Cultural Services as a School Counselor for Kindergarten through Grade
twelve.
The counselors in MSAD #50 are committed to human growth and development
as well as community development, and they share an appreciation for diverse
individuals and lifestyles. The counselors of the district support the
guidance program's mission of helping students to develop self-esteem,
and to make responsible decisions and deal effectively with change, as
well as to make valuable contributions to their communities and society-at-large. |
