CURRENT EVENTS
After our last meeting, we asked Mr. Beverage to come to our March meeting to field some questions about athletics, mainly the travel time required to be part of the Mountain Valley Converence. Interscholastic activities are governed by the Maine Principals Association, so we were eager to hear our principal's point of view. He agreed and therefore, that was the focus of our entire meeting tonight. Fortunately, Mr. Hastings, our Athletic Director, who is also a member of the MPA, attended this meeting and educated us very well in the whole process (not a simple task!) Our meeting was also attended by several coaches and members of the GVHS Sports Boosters, so we had input from several aspects of the program.
Mr. Hastings summed up the problem in one word: mileage - that's what determines travel time, the students' schedule in terms of academics and sleep, and travel costs - reducing the mileage would have positive impact on all of these factors - unfortunately, to participate in the MVC, we have to travel to some fairly distant locations - there are 15 schools in the MVC, and the scheduling is very complex - "Just schedule the games furthest away on Friday nights and Saturdays" is not as simple as it sounds - everyone in the conference feels the way we do - they don't want to play schools 2-3 hours away any more than we do, but that's the only way the conference works - it's also not as simple as just getting out of the conference - without the conference, there are no tournaments, which doesn't sit well with coaches as well as most players - also, without the conference you have to do your own scheduling, which is a potentially daunting task, if you can even find schools willing to play you
Everybody agrees that the travel time is a problem, but there is no easy solution. Mr. Hastings, ironically enough, was attending a meeting of Athletic Directors in Winthrop the following day, and agreed to come to our April meeting to share what was discussed at that meeting with us.
Membership/Participation
We hope you'll join us at our next meeting. We're interested all aspects of GVHS. We're working on a Career Exploration Day for Sophomores in May, as well as continuing our exploration of improving the athletic program. We're bringing the Camden Shakespeare Theater Company to perform for the entire school on Thursday, April 12th, and Beat Bob is a one-man motivational volleyball program that's coming to GVHS on April 29th. We'd love to hear your ideas, concerns and suggestions, so come sit in on one of our meetings!
