September
- Meet with school counselor to discuss plans for after high school, check graduation requirements, non-credit requirements, etc.
- Register for the SAT and/or ACT.
- Get a password for Choices and take the interest inventory, explore career interests, and sort out further education possibilities.
- Finalize the list of colleges you are applying for and gather information.
- Watch for material on Financial Aid Information Night.
- Watch for and attend any college representative visits that interest you.
- Take advantage of open houses and tours offered by colleges.
- Complete the student data sheet and submit to Student Services.
October
- Meet with school counselor if you haven't already done so.
- If you have not registered for SAT and/or ACT, do it now.
- If you haven't finalized a list of colleges to apply to, do it now.
- Mark application deadlines on your calendar and plan for completion.
- Complete the student data sheet and submit to your counselor.
- Ask for required letters of reference from teachers, employers, clergy, etc.
- Distribute teacher recommendation forms.
- Request high school transcripts for each application. (Give Student Services two full weeks before your deadline.)
- If you are applying for early decision, submit the completed application now.
- Prepare for and participate in college interviews.
- Find out which financial aid applications your colleges of choice require. Mark their deadlines on your calendar.
November
- Make sure that your college applications, including essays, are complete. Have an adult that you trust review all of it to give you feedback. Make changes as necessary.
- Make sure the counselor has received all of your recommendations in the Student Services office.
- Make sure that your transcript was sent from the Student Services office.
- Attend a financial aid night.
December
- Review your applications with Mrs. Grotton to ensure that they are complete.
- Remind your parents to complete a FAFSA form on line (website), or pick up the hard copy from Student Services.
- Pick up and check out the first edition of the scholarship book, available the 2nd week of December.
- Submit PROFILE to College Scholarship Service, if needed.
January
- Request that midyear grade reports be sent to appropriate colleges by early February. (Check with us for specific date.)
- Work with your parent(s) or guardian to complete and submit FAFSA as soon as possible.
- Respond to any requests for any additional information from colleges.
February
- Register for Advanced Placement exams, if appropriate.
- Submit your FAFSA if it hasn't been done already.
- Check to see that midyear grades were indeed sent to schools to which you have applied.
March
- Review the Student Aid Report (SAR) for consistency with the FAFSA that was submitted.
- Check out the second edition of the Scholarship Book.
April
- Evaluate college acceptances and financial aid packages. Consider the big picture and what you really want and need. Converse with people who know you well.
May
- Decide which college is your preferred one, and notify ALL colleges that you applied to of your decision.
- Submit an acceptance deposit to the admissions office of the college you have chosen.
June
- Make sure final transcripts are sent to your college of choice if required.
