Works Cited Format

Whenever you get information from a book, magazine, encyclopedia, or from the internet, you are using someone else’s work, and you have to give that person credit. We do this in a report by making a list of sources called “Works Cited”. Here are some samples you can use to make your list of “Works Cited”.


Book

Author’s last name, First name. Title (underlined). Date.
Example:
Lepthien, Emilie U. Koalas. 1990.


Encyclopedia

Title of Article (in quotes). Title of Reference Book (underlined). Volume:
Page. Date.
Example:
“Koala.” The Raintree Illustrated Science Encyclopedia. 9:963. 1991.


Magazine

Title of Article (in quotes). Title of Magazine (underlined). Date.
Example:
“Koalas and Other Australian Animals.” Zoobooks. 11/97.


Interview

Person interviewed’s last name, First name. Type of interview. Date.
Example:
Gilfenbaum, Sara. Personal Interview. 2 Mar. 2001.


Online Resources
Database

Title of Article (in quotes). Name of database (underlined). Date accessed.
Example:
“Koala.” EBSCO Animals. 2/27/01.


Encyclopedia

Title of Article (in quotes). Name of database (underlined). Date accessed.
Example:
“Koalas.” World Book Online America’s Edition. 2/13/01.


Web Site

Title of Article (in quotes). Web site address. Date accessed.
Example:
“The Australian Koala Page.” http://www.aaa.com.au/Koala.shtml. 2/13/01
