Adolphe Sax

By Sarah

Adolphe Sax was born November 6,1814 in Dinant, Belgium. He is white.  His father’s name was Charles Joseph Sax. Adolphe was the first of eleven children. He studied the flute and clarinet.

He went to the Royal School of singing in Brussels. He made instruments and his father made instruments, too. He was teaching at the Paris Conservatoire. He began to make his own instruments at an early age.

His father invented instruments. He followed in his father’s footsteps. At the age of 6, he started to make instruments. He invented the saxophone. He invented it in France on June 28, 1846. The purpose of the saxophone was for it to be in an orchestra and for entertainment.

Sax’s invention was planned. He always worked on making his instruments better. Adolphe had some problems, though. When he was going to have it exhibited, somebody kicked the saxophone and it fell apart. There was no end to the inventor’s struggles.  He was the victim of crooks and he had a lot of enemies.

The saxophone has nineteen brass keys. Its mouthpiece is similar to the bass clarinets.  It is a brass instrument with a wooden reed. The saxophone has a compass of three octaves begining from the lower B flat under the staff (bass clef).

Sax didn’t have any help but a little from his Dad. He got it patented June 28, 1846.

Sax’s instruments outlived his fame. During his last years, he lived poor and he lived on a modest pension donated to him by the French Government.

He died February 4, 1894, in Paris. He died in the year of 1894 at the age of 80.
