Stephanie Kwolek
By Jessica

My inventor is Stephanie Kwolek. She was born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, in 1923. As a kid she wanted to be a fashion designer. Her dad was an amateur naturalist. But her dad died when she was only 10 years old. In college she wanted to be a doctor. She studied chemistry at Carnegie-Melon Unit in Pittsburgh. She couldn’t afford medical school so she went to work at the Dupont Company. She was a chemist and a research scientist.

Stephanie invented Kevlar, which is used in bullet proof vests. Kevlar was invented in 1966 and it was made at Dupont. The invention was made to help protect your chest. I think it was planned because she was experimenting with synthetic fibers. She got her materials from the chemistry lab because she worked there and the materials were available.  Kevlar was a material, too. There was no information to tell me that she had any help. She got a lot of patents, but I’m not sure when she got them.  She made an invention, which is famous. It was very popular because all the police have them to protect their chest from a bullet. She got 28 patents for her inventions.

I think an interesting fact is that she worked in a chemistry lab.  That was pretty cool. A sad thing that happened was that her father died when she was only 10 years old. That was pretty sad. I like my inventor’s invention a lot!!!!!
