The Chickadee Award
A Maine Children's Choice Picture Book Project
How We Did It at Lura Libby School
2006-2007

The Chickadee Award, named after Maine's state bird, is a program for children in kindergarten through fourth grade.  This year, ten books published in 2005 were read by our students, who voted on their favorite during the last week of March.

At Lura Libby School, many of the Chickadee books were read during library classes throughout the year.  During March, some of our third and fourth graders spent their lunch time making campaign posters for the books.  The library was very busy with up to 40 students discussing books, planning their posters, and drawing!  The last week of March, the posters were displayed in the hallway, classes did a poster tour, and grades one through four voted for their favorite book.

The winner, at Lura Libby School, Cushing Community School, and throughout the state, was The Great Fuzz Frenzy by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel with illustrations by Janet Stevens.

Eating, planning, collecting materials, and drawing--all this activity and not one accident!
