Through the generosity of an MBNA grant, PE classes at Lura Libby School and Cushing Community School now incorporate pedometers into the curriculum.
The 'Step Rate Up - Pedometer Power' unit uses Digi-Walker2 pedometers and Insta Pulse heart rate monitors. Both tools provide objective, authentic assessment. Students strive to get as many steps as possible during PE activities. Additionally, they increase their heart rates while obtaining steps. Step counts are recorded on student data cards at the end of each class. The data is then transferred to an Excel spreadsheet to track student progress.
This unit integrates math, technology, and geography. One of the goals is for an entire class to accumulate enough steps to go the distance to a Maine location. A state of Maine map is posted and marked with various fitness orientated sites (ie - Baxter State Park, Cathedral Woods on Monhegan Island, Moxie Falls). Together, as a class, students hypothetically reach one of these locations.
Staff members also have the opportunity to use pedometers. The grant purchased 30 pedometers that are designated for staff use. Interested principals, administrative assistants, teachers, educational technicians, custodians, kitchen workers, and others are invited to monitor their own levels of physical activity, set goals, and improve their health.
