Individual Counseling * Individual counseling occurs on a one-to-one, as-needed basis. This interaction between a student and the counselor provides a student with the opportunity to explore ideas, share their feelings, and resolve crises. Some common issues discussed include: Building self-image, improving relations with their peers, communication skills, coping with change, dealing with stress, loss, or crises. Students are referred to the school counselor by their parents, their teachers, or themselves. *School counseling must be brief in nature due to limited time constraints, and is not intended to be long-term therapy. If therapy is desired, the school counselor is available to coordinate a referral to a community agency. Small Group Counseling Small groups are offered throughout the year for students who need or desire more school counseling related work. Specific, age-appropriate topics discussed in small groups include anger management and friendship skills. Groups are offered at each grade level with 4-6 students for six weeks at a time. Group members share ideas, gain new knowledge, learn from each other, and practice skills. |
