OCTOBER and COMMUNITY - SHARING, CARING, and GIVING!

October 24, 2005

To celebrate both Fire Safety Month AND the 2005/2006 school theme, the Thomaston Fire Department visited Lura Libby School!

Firefighters Larry and Ben arrived at school Monday morning in Thomaston's Engine 4.  This alone created much excitement around school!  During the day, each 1st - 4th grade class came to the multipurpose room for an interactive, engaging presentation about fire safety.  Larry spoke to students about several of the tools used on a fire scene including a pick axe, thermal imaging camera, and the pike pole.  Ben dressed in full turnout gear and SCBA allowing students to see and hear a firefighter up close.  Each student shook hands with Ben (who reminded us of Star Wars' - Darth Vader).

Outside, students explored the many components and compartments of Engine 4.  Ben and Larry showed students the "911 seats," where the pump operator works, the storage compartment for air tanks, the "trash line," the hidden ladders onboard, AND turned lights and sirens on for our pleasure!  Each student received a Junior Fireman helmet and a bag of goodies from the Thomaston Fire Department.

The fourth graders presentation ended with a fast and fun game of "firefighter tag."  Larry and Ben got a workout as they chased  students around the school's multipurpose room.  If tagged, students would go to a floor mat and "stop, drop, and roll" in order to get back into the game.  Much laughter and excitement filled the room as kids and local heroes took the time to play!

Kindergartners at Lura Libby School had the privilege of sharing their lunchtime with Larry and Ben.  The firemen settled comfortably within groups of students enjoying the day's menu of hotdogs and macaroni and cheese!
