Students at Lura Libby School and Cushing
Community School immediately responded to the needs of Hurricane Katrina
victims in September 2005 by collecting bottled water. Gallons of
water were brought into school by the children. The bottled water
was delivered to the Clear Channel radio station in Rockland. From
there is went to Augusta and was loaded on a truck headed to Mississippi.
This humanitarian effort was the school’s
first community event of the new school year. Activities designed
to involve students in their community are planned throughout the year.

| In October, Cushing Community School and
Lura Libby School participated in Project Katrina: Read for Relief, a book
drive initiated and carried out by Maine librarians. Penny Brown,
librarian at Livermore Falls Public Library, began the project after hearing
on the news that shelters across the south needed reading materials for
families and individuals.
Our district collected 20 boxes of new or “like new” books for children, young adults, and adults. The books were delivered to the Maine State Library and then trucked to Alabama by International Paper Company. |
