Hi, my name is Joan Benoit Samuelson. I was born in 1957 in Portland, Maine. My childhood dream was to be a professional skier. And I broke my leg and became a famous runner instead. To get back in shape I ran. I was the only female student in my high school to run cross-country. I went to Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. In May 1984, I won the U.S. Olympic trials marathon only 17 days after arthroscopic knee surgery. I was the winner of the Boston marathon in 1983,and hold the record for the Chicago marathon, which I set in 1985. During my life Edmund Musky was the first democrat in the twentieth century elected by Maine to the U.S senate in 1958. George Mitchell was the leader of the U.S. senate in 1989. I run more than 100 miles a week. In early February 1996, my quest for a spot on the 1996 Olympic team ended with a time of 2:36.54, thirteenth place and just seven minutes behind the first-place finisher. And I also have two children. By
