Louis Francis Sockalexis

Hi, I am Louis Francis Sockalexis.   I was born on Indian Island  October  24,1871.  I was the Grand Chief of the Bear Clan.  I could throw a baseball over 600 feet across the Penobscot River at the Bangor Race Track.  I could pitch a ball across the entire oval.  I went to St. Mary’s in Van Buren first.   In 1884-85 I was at Holy Cross in Worcester. MA.  In 1896 I went to Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.   I was the first American Indian to play professional baseball on a major league team.  I was an outfielder for the National League Cleveland Spiders.
