Hello. My name is Samantha Smith. I was born in Augusta, Maine
in 1972 and died in 1985. I went to elementary school in Manchester,
Maine. I wrote a letter to Yuri Andropov about the nuclear war. I wanted to know if he agreed about having a nuclear war or not. I said you did not have to answer but I would really like to know. In the letter I also said that God made the world for us to live together in peace and not to fight. A few days latter he wrote back. In the letter was an invitation to the Soviet Union. My family decided to go. These things happened in my life time. In 1980 the U.S. government agreed to pay 81.5 million to the Penobscot and Passamaquoddy Indian for land wrongly seized. Edmund Muskie became Secretary of State for President Jimmy Carter. I wrote a book called Journey to the Soviet Union. In Russia there is a mountain named for me; it is called Mount Samantha! I also had a TV show called Lime Street. I had two wonderful parents. My mother’s name is Jane and my father’s name is Arthur. My father and I went back to the Soviet Union. After going to the Soviet Union we went to Russia to talk to them about the war. We had a nice time. When we were on our way back there was a plane crash and my father and I died. In Augusta, Maine there is a statue of me that you can see. Thank you. by
