TITLE ONE AT LURA LIBBY ELEMENTARY
The Title One program in M.S.A.D.#50 focuses on grades K-2, with formal and informal assessment, intensive intervention with one-to-one and small-group tutoring, consultation with teachers, and in-service training. At Lura Libby, Patricia Mellor, literacy specialist, conducts the program with the assistance of Marilyn Wilson, educational technician.
All first graders are screened with a group pre-reading test. Eligible students in first and second grade have priority in placement, but some third graders and kindergarten groups receive services.
The Title One literacy specialist, teacher, and trained educational technician conduct lessons with eligible students involving the following: training in phonological awareness; instruction in phonics and decoding; reading and rereading of trade books, linguistic stories, and other texts; practice with developing sight vocabulary and comprehension; guidance in applying a variety of reading strategies; writing sentences related to the lessons.
