EMERGENT READER INFORMATION

When the students enters this stage he or she:
o Speaks
o Shows interest in print

Major goals:
o Enjoy experiences with books and print
o Become familiar with the pattern of stories
o Understand and follow the sequence of stories
o Experiment with reading and writing independently
o See themselves as developing readers and writers
o Begin to understand the purpose and function of print

Teaching approaches to be used:
o Reading aloud to children
o Retelling stories together
o Shared reading
o Experimenting with writing

INITIAL READER INFORMATION

When the students enters this stage he or she:
o Reads some words
o Has developed some specific print concepts
o Matches some speech sounds with letters

Major goals:
o Acquire sight vocabulary
o Use a variety of ways to identify words not known at sight
o See themselves as readers and writers

Teaching approaches to be used:
o Continue reading aloud a variety of children's literature
o Continue shared reading
o Activities focusing on sight vocabulary, storytelling, and word identification strategies
o Writing process
