At one point in time there
was a Nature Trail behind the St. George School. Over the years the trail
became overgrown and difficult to follow. As a way to learn about forestry,
our environment , our community, working together the St. George School 6th
graders and Alternative Education students decided to REVIVE the old nature
trail and create the ST. GEORGE OUTDOOR LEARNING CENTER.

Youth Forestry Camp
October 2004
In October 2004 the St. George School 6th graders and Alternative Education students participated in Tanglewood's three-day, two-night Youth Forestry Camp in Lincolnville, Maine. There, and as the first step in creating a nature trail at the St. George School, students learned a variety of forestry skills necessary to plan and construct a nature trail. First, they learned how to properly pace, then they learned how to correctly use a compass. The next step was to survey the forest for hardwood and softwood trees for the purpose of highlighting interesting locations along the nature trail. The final step was to create a land management plan for the forest behind our school. During that process, students proposed where trails should be based on forest highlights , parking lot locations and sign locations.
