This year the St. George School
sixth graders and the Alternative Education students went to the youth
forestry camp to learn about making trails and telling the difference
between various trees. What we are trying to revive the overgrown nature
trail behind our school into an outdoor learning center. We will try to start
trail construction in spring of 2005 .Why? Because we would like an educational
experience with the outdoors and nature.
One of Tanglewood's camps is a 4H Youth Forestry Camp. We took our three
day and two night trip in October 2004. We learned how to build and manage a
successful nature trail and a wonderful outdoor learning center.
While we were there we learned about pacing, compass use, how to design a park,
about a soil auger, we learned about land management, plot points, differences
between trees, and measure distance.
