The St. George School Outdoor Learning Center

Nature Trail Index

Hi, my name is Kelsie and I go to the St. George school. At the beginning of the year, the whole 6th grade and Alternative Education students went to Tanglewood Youth Forestry Camp,  FUN!! Since we have never built a trail we went to the camp in Lincolnville to learn how to build our own trail.
Some good things that we did is stuff like learning how to cooperate with each other buy being with a group of people and being in the same cabin for a long period of time. We learned land management plans.
Rec time which was a time that we would have during the day was a time when we would play games like Bat and Moth, each one teach one, and soccer. Some other fun stuff that we went on a night walk, and played Bat and Moth. Also during the night walk we did a band-aid activity when we opened a band-aid and it would glow in the dark. The night after that, we had a Talent Show and some very brave girls came out with their pants pulled up very high! It was hilarious!!
We did all sorts of stuff like venturing through the woods, eating meals that do not contain any meat, and camping in log cabins, but not really camping because the cabin I slept in had a full bathroom, three bedrooms, six bunk beds, which is 12 beds all together!! We had nine people in my cabin group.

Our very fun teacher with some other girls played a prank on us by coming through our cabins while we weren't there and put plastic spiders in our beds! That was soooo funny!
Some things that we need to do to our St. George School Outdoor Learning Center is design a trail, divide where to put the parking lot. Where to put the paths and highlighting important parts to the trail, where to put the trash cans, and where to put signs.
While we were there we also learned how to use compasses, how to navigate, learned how to use a dirt auger, played games like each one, teach one, and we also learned about hard wood trees and soft wood trees. And also we learned land management plan. We also made measurements of pathways, went on a night walk and saw a porcupine. We were about 10-15 feet away from it and I thought that it was going to attack us ..... RIGHT!!!!
That was the first time I ever saw a porcupine besides on the road.

This is the spot that I picked for our Nature trail persuasive essay, and this is a piece of the marsh that is in the part of our nature trail. We got to take pictures and write a persuasive essay to either the community to let us use a part of their property to include it in our nature trail. Or we wrote them to our teachers.

The Blue Spruce PowerPoint Slide show
We also wrote a PowerPoint slide show about a selected tree. My particular tree that I did a slide show on is the blue spruce. If you would like to view my slide show, click on the link above. Enjoy!
