The reason the 6th graders and the Alternative Ed are working on the nature trail is because we want it to be nice for people to hike and observe the nature around them. We want people be able to have a good hiking trail too because the nicest ones are in Rockland. It would be nicer for the people of St. George to have a trail that is close to home and is in walking distance.. We can also have classes down there for other 6th graders to come. Also we went to Tanglewood Youth Forestry Camp for 3 days to better understand about managing nature trails and where to put the paths and other things. At Tanglewood we also learned how to use a compass, a soil auger, pacing areas, using compasses, and how to judge whether a forest is hardwood, softwood, or mixed. Also on the last day of camp we had thought up a trail  management plan for the Yankee wood lot near the camp.

Here's our stuff in Mrs. Maynard's room

Thats a lot of stuff!

Here is the spot I chose for my persuasive paper.

Kind of grubby, isn't it?

Click here to view my black walnut tree PowerPoint slideshow. I did this because we needed to know about different types of local trees to help us with the nature trail.

St.George that a certain spot of our choice should be a highlight on the nature trail.
