Moon Myths
by 6th Graders
Moon Myths is a project that integrates Science, Language Arts and Computer Technology. Students study the phases of the moon in Science. Classes read several mythical examples of why the moon changes shape. Then, answering the question "How would you adapt the moon phases to create a new myth?", they write their own original moon myth. The final typed myth must exhibit proper mechanics (spelling, capitalization, punctuation and senetence structure).
Students illustrate their story with a simple animation made with AnimationMaker software. They plan their animation on a storyboard. Each animation must be 4-6 frames long and properly sequenced. It is then saved as a gif file and inserted into their myth document.
TGS 6th grade students and staff enjoyed a live perfomance of their myths. The stories with animations were projected on a screen and read aloud for all to enjoy. Here are just a few samples:

Fred and the Cookie
by Cody Long ago, a giant, Fred, flew up into the sky because he saw a giant cookie, the moon. Every night when there is a whole cookie Fred comes and takes a bite of the cookie. He does this until there is nothing left. When there is nothing left, cookie crumbs fall out of the sky and make a whole new cookie. Then Fred eats the cookie little by little. The whole cookie comes back again and again. Each time Fred eats it little by little. |

The Cat and the Moon
by Isaac There is a cat that hates the Moon. So the cat hits the Moon with a hammer and knocks off a piece of the moon. Then keeps on doing that until there is almost nothing left. Then the moon forms a shield that you can’t see through. After the moon heals some then moon forms a shield you can see through and the moon laughs at the cat because he can’t get through the shield until the moon is healed and the shield wares off. After the shield wares off it happens all over again and again. FOR EVER |
