Place text or pictures in specific places on the page. 
Without a table, it would be difficult to place the image where it is and have text next to it. 

 
A table is needed to put text between two pictures. A title would go well here.

Put space between photos by increasing the cell spacing. 
Here the cell spacing is 10 and the cell border is 0. This same effect can be achieved by cell padding = 5 cell spacing = 0.

Change the background color/pix of a certain area of the page. 
I have colored only this one cell. I did this by going to Table Properties, Cell, clicking on Use Color in cell background and selecting a color.
Here I have used an image as the background to this text. I did this by going to same place as above but using Use Image instead of Use Color.
